A Rising Tide of ‘Underwater’ Homeowners

October 9, 2008

The relentless slide in home prices has left nearly one in six U.S. homeowners owing more on a mortgage than the home is worth, raising the possibility of a rise in defaults — the very misfortune that touched off the credit crisis last year.

The result of homeowners being “underwater” is more pressure on an economy that is already in a downturn. No longer having equity in their homes makes people feel less rich and thus less inclined to shop at the mall.

State Fair opens 12-day schedule
Thursday, October 9, 2008

COLUMBIA — The 139th South Carolina State Fair opened a 12-day run Wednesday afternoon, with plenty of exhibits, rides and food.

The fair runs through Oct. 19.

This fair includes an exhibit from the Smithsonian called “Key Ingredients: America by Food.” The Humanities Council South Carolina is sponsoring the exhibit.

T.J. Wallace told The State newspaper that the exhibit includes American food traditions, including home cooking, festivals and feasts and holiday traditions.

The newest delicacy this year is fried corn on the cob.

There also will be plenty of the usual favorite fare: giant turkey legs, cotton candy, Polish sausage, barbecue ribs, chicken on a stick, corn dogs, pizza, hamburgers and elephants ears.
