CHARLESTON, S.C., Dec 17, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Shawn A. Jenkins, president and CEO of Benefitfocus, has been chosen to join the board of directors for the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Foundation. Jenkins was unanimously elected by the board to a three-year term, beginning November 21, 2008.
The MUSC Foundation was chartered in 1966 as the educational, clinical and research mission for the university. The tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization supports education, research, patient care, endowed professorships, scholarships, new campus facilities and other much needed academic ventures. The foundation is governed by a board of directors, consisting of 43 members including the president of MUSC.
“I am honored to be a part of such a remarkable foundation,” said Jenkins. “I look forward to working with this esteemed group to further healthcare education and technology innovation in South Carolina.”
Jenkins co-founded Benefitfocus, now the largest healthcare benefits software provider in the U.S, in 2000. Benefitfocus creates software and solutions to manage and provide healthcare information that is easy for insurance carriers, employer groups and individual consumers to understand. The company has experienced record growth and has been recognized as the fastest-growing technology company in South Carolina. As president and CEO of Benefitfocus, Jenkins is responsible for marketing, business development and strategic positioning of the company. He also sits on the company’s board of directors.
Founded in 1824 in Charleston, MUSC is the oldest medical school in the South and is the largest non-federal employer in Charleston; the university and its affiliates have collective annual budgets in excess of $1.6 billion. Since its founding, the university has expanded from a small private college for the training of physicians to a state university with a medical center and six colleges for the education of a broad range of health professionals, biomedical scientists and other health related personnel. MUSC educates and trains more than 3,000 students and residents, and has nearly 11,000 employees, including 1,500 faculty members.
In addition to its six specialized colleges, MUSC operates a 750-bed medical center, which includes a nationally recognized Children’s Hospital and a leading Institute of Psychiatry. In 2007, the medical center underwent a 641,000 square foot expansion. This new facility has 156 beds, nine operating rooms, catheterization laboratories, interventional radiology laboratories, state-of-the-art endoscopy suites, imaging suites, outpatient clinic space and a dedicated around-the-clock chest pain center for rapid diagnosis and treatment.
