I’ON
October 6, 2008
Ever since Charleston was founded by European settlers in 1670, it has been an extraordinary, storied place. Water defines the peninsular city, just a few minutes from I’On by boat or by car. I’On is proud to be a neighborhood of the beautiful and historic Town of Mount Pleasant, on the eastern side the Cooper River from Charleston.
Three island beaches are within five to 15 miles from I’On - Sullivan’s Island is the most genteel with it’s old beach houses, lighthouse, historic fort and a handful of popular restaurants; Isle of Palms boasts a championship golf course, county park, and beachfront commercial district; and then there’s funky Folly Beach, with its pier, eateries and great surfing spots.
It’s easy to shop near I’On. For groceries, there’s the new Bi-Lo within walking distance, and Harris-Teeter and Publix stores are each within two miles. For just about every other kind of shop or professional service you can imagine, there’s Mount Pleasant’s commercial thoroughfares of Coleman Boulevard and Johnnie Dodds Boulevard (U.S. 17). And a few miles north is Towne Centre, which includes a 16-screen movie theater, coffee shops, restaurants and dozens of shops and major department stores.
From world-class golf and tennis tournaments to minor league baseball and the Cooper River Bridge Run, greater Charleston abounds with sporting events to watch or to take part in. The arts play a vital role here, too, with live theatre and music performances year-round, along with a professional symphony orchestra, and venues large and small for a variety of performances and festivals.
In recent decades, Lowcountry cuisine has come into its own. With a bounty of fresh seafood, fruits and vegetables harvested locally, chefs here consistently create award-winning menus. Charleston-area restaurants have been recognized by Esquire, Food & Wine, New York Times, Saveur. (And don’t forget The Square Onion and O’Brion’s Pub and Grille right here in I’On Square!).
In I’On is the East Cooper Montessori School providing a rigorous Montessori education, guiding children toward academic excellence, lifelong learning, and stewardship of the greater community. Children also attend James B. Edwards Elementary only 1.5 miles from I’On. Moultrie Middle is approximately two miles away near the Old Village, and the new Wando High School on Highway 17. Excellent private schools are also nearby, along with the College of Charleston, The Citadel, and Trident Technical College. Also, neighbors can walk or ride bikes along the sidewalk to the Mount Pleasant Regional Library, less than one mile away.
More than great facilities, the I’On Club is place where people have fun. Expert
