It’s official. Our community garden has been planted and we are eagerly awaiting harvest time. In addition to being a source of great organic vegetables we hope to be a resource of information to help others establish more neighborhood gardens throughout North Charleston.
We want to thank Marty from Dukes Garden Center for your expertise and beautiful plants, Jennifer from the Children’s Garden Project and the residents of Mixson for providing the muscle to make this happen.
Jennifer - Charleston Area Children’s Garden Project
Jennifer has been nominated to be on the board of Directors for the Charleston Children’s Garden. Among the challenges of our time is to build and nurture sustainable communities designed to be consistent with nature’s inherent ability to sustain life. The knowledge and process of growing edible food engages children in a hands-on involvement with their community, an integral awareness of what maintains health, and provides lessons for how all living things are inter-related. We have a vision of creating safe and beautiful places, as well as fighting childhood hunger, obesity, and diabetes through experiences related to growing a garden.
The Garden project seeks to involve children in a “learning community” that begins with a garden and extends to the limits of our collective imagination. The Charleston Children’s Project sites are all over the metropolitan area – on the Peninsula, James Island, Johns Island, West Ashley, and North Charleston.
