Black bears occur in manageable numbers in the southern Appalachian Mountains and the coastal bays and swamps of South Carolina.There are two populations of American black bear (Ursus americanus) in South Carolina, one located in the mountainous region and the other in the northern coastal plain.

A van hit and killed a black bear that ran onto eastbound Interstate 26 between Jedburg and Summerville on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
